Ensuring smooth accessto culture at the 2010 World ExpoThe Shanghai 2010 World Expo is expected to attractseventy million visitors between May and October – an average of 400,000 a day.
KONE was chosen to provide a People Flow™ solution for the prestigious main venue, the Culture Center, at the heart of the Expo. A permanent structure intended to be used long after the Expo finishes, KONE supplied the building’s 26 escalatorsand 16 elevators to meet the demands of this high capacity arena and exhibition space.
As this high-profile venue is part of the Expo’s opening ceremony, the construction of the Culture Center had a very tight schedule. Due to the complexity of the building’s design, the escalators could only be transported to the site once key structural work had been completed. Ensuring a smooth flow of people around a multi-functional venue, while maintaining aesthetic harmony with the building’s unique design and long-term requirements, meant KONE had to supply both high quality and durability.
KONE’s primary tasks were to:- Meet a tight deadline- Maintain People Flow during demanding peak times- Ensure lower lifecycle costs through solutions that are both eco-efficient and durable- Provide pro-active on-site maintenance
Maintaining People Flow in Shanghai’s largest performance venue
Long-term eco-efficiencyThe Culture Center required a solution that was both energy efficient and capable of managing heavy loads of people for many years to come. With its package of escalators and elevators, KONE offered an Eco-Efficient solution that doesn’t sacrifice durability or quality. It’s also a solution that delivers significantly lower lifecycle costs.
Seamless People FlowThe Culture Center experiences intense traffic peaks when 18,000 visitors arrive at or depart from events. With such large volumes of people, durable equipment is needed to transport guests to and from the seating areas quickly and comfortably. Safety is also important, and in the case of an emergency, evacuation has to be swift and easy. KONE escalators and elevators form an integral part of a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable visitor experience.
