Every year 10,000 families in the UK have a child with a terminal or life threatening illness. No one expects to out-live their children and the pressures on a family can be extreme.
Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity exists to provide a unique and special service to these families. Set up in 1986, they offer non-medical, practical and emotional help to all the family members, aiming to maintain a sense of normality and support them through traumatic times.www.rainbowtrust.org.uk
The second annual KONE Bike to Work Day took place on 19th June 2009. Many employees left their cars at home and rode into work to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research UK. Getting fit and being environmentally friendly was an added bonus! This year there was a dress down day at all the KONE offices for those who could not bike into work. In total, we raised £312!
In November 2003 Les Niewiara, KONE Operations Manager was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In the same year, just over 7,000 others also got the same news. By the end of this year, nearly all of those people would have died and there will be less than 200 left.
Awareness of pancreatic cancer is very low and Les has organised and participated in a number of cycling events to push awareness of the disease up the political, medical and charitable agenda and to also raise funds for research.
This summer, Les organised Bike to the Future 2008 for himself and his team – a 950 mile cycle ride from London to Krakow, Poland. Due to ill health, Les was unable to cycle the first few stages, but once his health had improved he flew out to meet the rest of the team in Germany and joined them on the latter stages through to it's completion in Krakow .
KONE are proud to have supported Les and his team throughout ‘Bike To The Future 2008’ and many KONE colleagues joined the team on various stages of their ride.
It is with great sadness that Les passed away on 18th December 2008. Les will be missed by all his colleagues at KONE and our thoughts are with his family.
