Constructed from 2005-2009, the striking steel and glass Broadgate skyscraper is connected to the Bishopsgate block by a covered sky-lit retail plaza.
In a real estate market as costly as London, efficient use of floor space is paramount. Equally important for this high-profile building complex is to ensure a smooth flow of people at all times – especially during busy morning and lunch hours when vast crowds of office workers converge on the elevators.
17 seconds to destination With the DCS system passengers select their destinations from touch screen terminals or just showing their access card. The system then guides them to their assigned elevator, minimising the number of stops and cutting transit time to 17 seconds on average. KONE DCS also saves costs: at 201 Bishopsgate, eight elevators do the work of ten conventional elevators with up and down call buttons.
Smart integrated solutionKONE’s destination control system is particularly effective in office buildings, as it can be programmed to match building occupancy. The 13 floors of 201 Bishopsgate are served by eight KONE Alta™passenger elevators integrated with access control turnstiles in the lobby. Employees display their access cards at the turnstile, which automatically identifies their destination. The system calculates walking time to the elevator when selecting the best car to serve the passenger, and the doors open automatically at the optimum moment. The system can group passengers going to the same floor which shortens the transit time by making the fewest possible intermediate stops.
Seamless transitionThe system offers numerous benefits to the people who ride the elevators every day: orderly boarding, enhanced comfort, shorter waiting time and seamless transition from the building entrance to their desks. Even in busy periods, the elevator cars are never as crowded as with conventional systems.

The developer, British Land, selected KONE to design a customised double-deck elevator solution equipped with the KONE Destination Control System (DCS) to handle peaks in People Flow™ without wasting a single precious inch of rentable space.
Two elevators in one Broadgate Tower features a highly efficient double-deck elevator solution doubling or even tripling the handling capacity of one elevator shaft compared to conventional solutions.
With two banks of five KONE Alta™ double-deck passenger elevators serving the 35-story building, major space savings are achieved by positioning two elevator cars in the same hoistway serving two adjacent floor simultaneously, one on top of the other. This increases the rental space of the building and shortens the payback time of the elevators in the building. Combined with KONE’s destination control system, the double-deck solution dramatically improves the elevator system’s capacity to handle traffic flow, particularly during rush hours when traditional systems become overcrowded.
