The building

The Tube is an essential means of transportation for Londoners, serving 3,000,000 passengers a day. The oldest underground system in the world, built in 1863, it is constantly renewing itself, with new lines and stations, and extensions to old ones.

The solution

The eleven new Jubilee line stations are equipped with 34 KONE elevators, 118 escalators and 2 autowalks providing the more than 120 million annual passengers safe and convenient access to the Tube. Jubilee is in fact the only line completely accessible by wheelchair.

The elevators are equipped with transparent glass sides to improve the security of passengers and to reduce vandalism. When specifying the stainless steel for the elevator panels, fire and scuff resistance were the main considerations.

Despite the many changes typical of such a complex project, KONE was successful in meeting the site delivery schedules.
