KONE's People Flow Day

KONE’s vision is to be an expert in transporting people through buildings smoothly, efficiently and in a safe manner without waiting. To gain deeper insight into what this vision means in practice, KONE holds an annual People Flow Day around the world.

KONE’s People Flow Day is designed to bring us closer to users and our customer. Teams of KONE employees act as researchers, talking to customers, interviewing the public, making on-site observations and filling in questionnaires. By studying exactly how, where and why people move in buildings during a typical weekday, employees gathered first-hand information on both the user and customer experience.

The People Flow Day activities are focused on either visiting an existing building to observe users or meeting a customer in six different types of buildings hotels, offices, medical facilities, transport hubs, residential buildings and retail premises.

KONE Ireland participated in this event for the first time in 2011. A selection of KONE employees visited sites at Victoria Square Shopping Centre, Belfast and St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre, Dublin to monitor the People Flow situation.

What is People Flow?

This year, over half of the world's population will be living in cities and other urban areas. In fact, there are already more than 20 'megacities' with a population of more than 10 million inhabitants. As the size of our cities increases, overcrowding and environmental problems will follow. This is one of the main reasons why KONE’s focus is on innovative solutions to make it easier for people to move around in buildings – what KONE describes as People Flow™. People Flow means transporting people in buildings in a smooth, quick, efficient and safe manner.

The best possible moment for optimizing People Flow in a building is when systems for a specific building project are being developed and planned. For example, the work to figure out the best transportation arrangements starts during the early building planning phase in close collaboration with architects, consultants and construction companies. In this way, KONE and its “People Flow experts” can correctly estimate which solutions are required for the building to be as user-friendly as possible. By positioning the elevators, escalators and other transport devices such as autowalks, in a manner that minimizes the queuing and blocking of passenger traffic, building owners can ensure that their buildings remain as efficient as possible once occupied. KONE also ensures that a building’s People Flow runs smoothly after the installation of new equipment. Proactive maintenance and modernization solutions are just some of the ways that keep the transportation solutions running smoothly during their operational lifecycle.
