Returning to business after Katrina’s devastation
The New Orleans department store covers 10,200 square meters over three floors and enjoys an average customer flow of 20,000 people per week.
In August 2005 the store was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, necessitating a complete renovation. KONE was chosen to repair the store’s existing passenger and freight elevators, install four new escalators, and help meet the many other challenges presented by the natural disaster.

Helping to improve energy efficiencyThrough the installation of four new eco-efficient KONE EcoMaster™ escalators at the New Orleans store, KONE was able to assist Saks Fifth Avenue in meeting their need to reduce energy consumption. The escalators’ advanced Eco3000™ drive systems achieve new levels in space savings, reliability, and aesthetics. In addition, the stand-by mode and energy-efficient LED lights also significantly reduce the amount of energy used.
Timely installation and seamless handoverDespite the considerable difficulties in the hurricane-stricken city, including severe labor shortages, KONE provided Saks Fifth Avenue New Orleans with a successful installation and handover. The solution enables the high volumes of shoppers to move smoothly around the vast store and meets the customer’s high demands for both safety and reliability. Just as importantly, KONE ensured that the department store could reopen on time.
Long-term maintenance contractKONE Modular Based Maintenance™ is a preventive maintenance method that enables KONE to design maintenance profiles and schedules specifically for individual projects. It has been in operation for many years and its continuous development has improved equipment availability. Since November 2009, the Saks National Agreement means that Saks will benefit from KONE’s experience and world-class service for the next ten years. KONE will be working very closely with Saks Incorporated’s facilities to ensure performance and response is maintained at a consistently high level across the United States.
