April 29, 2010 - After KONE, Inc. leaders presented the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation’s (EESF) Safe-T Rider program during the 2009 Americas Leadership Meeting in Chicago, a challenge was issued to KONE USA and KONE Canada to take the safety message to children in each branch’s respective school district. For the 2009 calendar year, a goal was set to reach 15,000 children with the program. The trend continues in 2010.
It is EESF’s mission to keep the riding public safe on our industry’s equipment. Each month, with the help of volunteers, EESF moves steadily toward the goal to reach 700,000 children during the 2009/10 school year with the Safe-T Rider program. The Safe-T Rider classroom kit includes a DVD featuring Safe-T Rider, a poster, teacher’s guide, activity books, stickers, tests and certificates.
The program has indeed grown - in the 2008/09 school year, KONE USA and KONE Canada branches were responsible for educating 7,260 children. KONE USA, KONE Canada and KONE Hawaii have, to date, reached 8,052 children during the current 2009/10 school year. Through KONE, Inc.’s efforts, 15,312 children have received the Safe-T Rider program in 2009 and 2010, representing 2.2% of EESF’s overall goal.
KONE, Inc. and EESF partnered to make this company-wide volunteer effort successful. KONE, Inc. sent several e-mails to its branches and to key individuals promoting the idea and giving team members step-by-step instructions on how to deliver the program. EESF included a KONE Volunteer Form on their website to facilitate ordering of the material. This tool, and the support of Laurie Dueitt, EESF Program Director, ensured timely delivery of program materials as well as proper Safe-T Rider costume logistics.
EESF sincerely appreciates the entire KONE team’s response to this endeavor and for setting an example of how the industry can help EESF accomplish its mission of educating the public on the safe and proper use of elevators, escalators and moving walks.
