KONE Secures an Order for the The Leadenhall Building in London

9/10/2007

KONE has signed a contract with British Land for the design, delivery and installation of all elevators and escalators for The Leadenhall Building in London, U.K.

Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, the new tower will be 225 meters tall making it the tallest building in the City of London.

“We are extremely pleased that British Land, one of Europe's top listed real estate companies has put their trust in KONE once more with such a landmark project. Our U.K. team continues to create great results and to win confidence among our customers,” says Noud Veeger, KONE EVP, Area Director for Central and North Europe.

The Leadenhall Building project will be equipped with 29 elevators and 3 escalators. When installed, 22 of the elevators will be fully scenic exterior glass elevators with a maximum speed of 8.0 m/s and a travel of approximately 220 meters. The installation of the equipment will start in July 2009 and is planned for completion in December 2010.

The decreasing profile of The Leadenhall Building provides a logical termination to a tall building, allowing it to create its own distinctive profile and to become a positive addition to the London skyline. The profile will also appear to anchor the tower to the ground giving a sense of strength.

The Leadenhall Building project follows KONE’s earlier successes with British Land in the City of London, the 201 Bishopsgate and The Broadgate Tower projects. The Broadgate Tower will have the first double-deck destination control system in the world due for completion in the spring of 2008.
