KONE’s Contribution to LEED

KONE strives to develop products, manufacturing processes and operating procedures in ways that not only provide superior products and systems but also take into consideration the environmental impact of our products throughout their life cycle. With our latest innovations in elevator and escalator technologies, KONE is successfully achieving those goals.

So, you ask “How does LEED relate to KONE solutions?”

Well, there are a number of credits in which KONE solutions can assist your project in achieving points. The main categories in which elevators and escalators can play a role in LEED-NC include; Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation in Design. The following chart shows each specific credit which can apply to elevators & escalators and the explanation regarding the impact KONE solutions provide.

Category Credit Intent How KONE
Contributes?
Energy & Atmosphere EAc1: Optimize Energy Performance To achieve increasing levels of energy performance beyond the prerequisite standard to reduce environmental and economic impacts associated with excessive energy use Through using the “Exceptional Calculation Method” the project team can document measures that reduce process loads (elevators / escalators) such as MRL vs.hydros. KONE can provide this documentation using an energy calculation tool.

MRc3: Materials Reuse To reuse building materials and products to reduce demand for virgin materials and reduce waste, thereby lessening impacts associated with the extraction and processing of virgin resources. Elevators / Escalators are specifically excluded from this credit.
MRc4: Recycled Content To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials. Elevators / Escalators are specifically excluded from this credit.
MRc5: Regional Materials To increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation. Elevators / Escalators are specifically excluded from this credit.
MRc6: Rapidly Renewable Materials To reduce the use and depletion of finite raw materials and long-cycle renewable materials by replacing them with rapidly renewable materials. KONE Elevators & Escalators do not contain Rapidly Renewable materials.
MRc7: Certified Wood To encourage environmentally responsible forest management. KONE’s raised wood panels are FSC certified.

IEQc4.1: Low-Emitting Materials - Adhesives & Sealants To reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants. KONE's installation methods do not apply adhesives or sealants on-site. All adhesives & sealants are applied in the manufacturing process. Therefore, this credit does not apply.
IEQc4.2: Low-Emitting Materials - Paints & Coatings To reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants. KONE's installation methods do not apply paints & coatings on-site. All paints & coatings are applied in the manufacturing process. Therefore, this credit does not apply.
IEQ4.3: Low-Emitting Materials - Flooring Systems To reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants. KONE does not supply the flooring for installation and therefore, this credit does not apply.
IEQ4.4: Low-Emitting Materials - Composite Wood & Agrifiber Products To reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants. KONE meets this requirement by providing urea-formaldehyde free raised wood panels as the standard offering.

IDc1: Innovation in Design Provide design teams and projects the opportunity to achieve exceptional performance above the requirements and/or innovative performance in categories not specifically addressed by LEED. Projects installing a Machine Room-Less elevator can achieve an ID credit through showing Process Energy Savings for Elevators. KONE can provide supporting documentation such as a carbon footprint assessment, energy calculations, calculations for the elimination of hydraulic oil etc...
