On October 28, 2009, the STX Europe shipyard in Finland delivered the Oasis of the Seas, the world's largest and most innovative cruise vessel, to Royal Caribbean International.

Onboard the ship, KONE has supplied and installed 41 custom-designed elevators, 2 escalators and 3 easy access lifting platforms for passengers with disabilities.

The elevators onboard represent a new generation of KONE people flow solutions dedicated to cruise vessels. These new solutions are a result of the long-term design and development cooperation between the cruise line, the shipyard and KONE, which was initiated several years ago.

“Due to its colossal size, the ship provided KONE with new challenges regarding the flow of passengers, crew and goods inside the vessel,” says Ari Lehtoranta, Executive Vice President, Major Projects, KONE. “By utilizing the proven and reliable KONE MonoSpace® and KONE MiniSpace™ technologies, KONE was able to generate new, eco-efficient and innovative solutions to help the vessel offer fast but smooth access for passengers and crew in all areas of this extraordinary cruise ship.”

Simultaneously, KONE has further developed the already proven "plug-in" installation method, which enables a much faster installation into a ship’s hull, in order to install the complex elevators with 16 landings.

The Oasis of the Seas’ gross tonnage is 225,000, the hull is 361 meters long and 66 meters wide. At its highest point, the deckhouse rises 72 meters above the sea level. The ship can thus be considered a floating "high-rise” building. The ship features 16 passenger decks and 2,704 staterooms. At its highest capacity, the ship can accommodate 6,360 passengers and 2,100 crew members. The Oasis of the Seas will cruise in and around the Caribbean from its home port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

KONE will also deliver the elevators and escalators for the Oasis of the Seas’ sister ship, the Allure of the Seas, which is scheduled for delivery from the STX Turku shipyard at the end of 2010.
