Combining the old with the new

KONE supplied and installed the 28 horizontal autowalks that make up the 1.5-kilometer pedestrian walkway responsible for moving visitors to and from the heart of the complex.

Excellent cooperation between Fiera Milano and KONE allowed the walkway, named “Ponte dei Mari” (Sea Bridge), to reuse 18 horizontal autowalks from the old city site and combine them with
ten new units. KONE used its considerable expertise in relocating existing units to create a seamless combination of old and new.

Innovative passenger guidance system

KONE’s innovative supervisory system automatically detects faults in the autowalks and notifies an operator sitting in a control room. One of the biggest benefits is the system’s passenger guidance solution, which automatically prevents people from entering the unit prior to restarting.

The passenger guidance system features an automatic gate that stops passengers entering the autowalk if it has stopped, an automated voice that instructs remaining passengers to exit,
and a predefined delay that allows passengers to leave safely before an exit gate closes. Sensors just before the gate mean it will open to let out any passengers who happen to still be on the autowalk. Cameras enable the remote operator to visually confirm that the autowalk is empty before restarting the unit.
