Working with KONE equipment is safe.

Workplace safety

Attention is paid to safety in all KONE processes. KONE strives to provide safe products and services to its customers and end-users as well as a safe working environment for its own people.

The Safety function in KONE is part of Human Resources. The Safety function’s task is to support the KONE units in their efforts to continuously improve their safety management activities. Internal audits are a focal point of workplace safety management and are regularly organized at KONE units. The Safety function audits the unit-level safety management. This approach is designed to reinforce safety issues as an integral part of the day-to-day work of every KONE employee.

All KONE units are required to comply with the company’s safety policy, which defines, for example, the general principles of safety operations and includes safety training and methods as well as information about reporting. An internal review system has been established for monitoring accidents in the workplace by following the trends in the development of IIFR* (Industrial Injury Frequency Rate) figures. Information about possible workplace safety and necessary corrective actions are communicated to all units.

KONE Safety Report 2005

KONE has had a work safety program since 1998 that aims to reduce the number of work-related accidents to zero. The injury rate within KONE is measured by the IIFR* (Industrial Injury Frequency Rate). According to IIFR statistics the policy has worked well: the number of accidents has been more than halved since 1998.

The KONE injury indicator IIFR dropped to its lowest level ever – 8.7 – in December 2005, from 11.1 in 2004, representing an achievement of 21.6 % annual reduction.

In 2005, occupational safety measures focused on the implementation and continuous development of programs introduced earlier. This has been further supported by increasing safety communications and monitoring by utilizing, for instance, virtual meeting technology while at the same time increasing two-way communication between corporate management and business units.

IIFR (Industrial Injury Frequency Rate): the number of injuries resulting in absence from work of one day or shift period or more per million hours worked.
