Within the next decade, theDutch railway network is rolling

out an extensive accessibility planwhich includes the addition

of vertical transportation solutions. KONEwill provide a

substantial number of escalators and elevators as part of a

multi-year program to improve travel and convenience for

travelers in several stations around theNetherlands.

Strength innumbers

“This is the start of a productive long-term relationship,” says

Bob vanMeijgaarden

, Public Transport& EscalatorsManager

at KONENetherlands.

“Our operations arewell organized and our equipment is easy

to use for all passengers, not only peoplewithdisabilities.

In terms of reliability, KONE reallymakes a difference,” van

Meijgaarden says.

Such dependabilitywill benefit both sides over the coming

decades asplans solidify. Some175elevators are expected to

be installed at 76 stations, up from an original 165 elevators.

More than120 escalators are expected tobe installed at 19

stations.

Durableandvisuallyappealing

Tomeet the demands of ProRail’s busy transport hubs, the

customizedKONE equipment includes the use of heavy-duty

and vandal-resistant components aswell as compliancewith

electromagnetic compatibility requirements, a big issue in

railway stations.

KONE’s eco-efficiency credentials help to keep down the

total cost of ownership, whichProRail appreciates. Theuse

of regenerative solutions reduces energy requirements by

recovering theenergygeneratedwhenanelevatoror escalator

is used.

LED lighting for the skirtingandbalustrade further enhance safety

andvisual appearance. “Theaestheticelement is important as

well,”vanMeijgaardennotes. “Wehave toensure safe transport

inahigh-useenvironment.”

ProRailmoves 1.2millionpassengers and100,000barrels

of goods per day. Smoothmovement throughmore than

400 railway stations is a key part of the transit package.

Trust in the future

To keep the systems running, withminimum

inconvenience for passengers, KONE conducts regular

maintenancework. Thismeans close coordination

with ProRail to ensure there is nodisruptionduring

themorning or late afternoonpeak flows of traffic.

“Our joint objective is for passenger satisfaction,” says

WinoCuijpers

, ContractManager at ProRail. “KONE is

responsive to our goal andmust do everythingpossible

to ensure as little disruption as possible.”
