KONE wins an order for DC Tower 1, Austria’s tallest building

Press Release Published 06/10/2010

KONE has won an order to supply 29 elevators and two escalators for DC Tower 1 in Vienna, Austria. At 220 meters, DC Tower 1 designed by the French architect Dominique Perrault will be the tallest building in Austria, and a distinguishing feature on the Viennese skyline. It also sets new standards in terms of energy efficiency.

The order includes 12 KONE Alta™, 10 KONE MonoSpace® Special, four KONE MiniSpace™, two KONE TranSys® freight elevators, one small freight elevator and two KONE EcoMaster® 130 escalators. The low and medium-rise and express elevators come equipped with energy efficient KONE EcoDisc® hoisting machines and regenerative drives.

DC Tower 1 will be one of the first office buildings in Austria to be erected and furnished in accordance with the European Commission’s energy and sustainability requirements for a green building. A green building certification with gold or platinum status under the LEED rating system is envisaged.

“The motto is to use energy sensibly, only where and when it is really necessary. At the end of the day, this will not only cut down on operating costs but also, and above all, save on available resources, thus complying with the ‘green building’ philosophy,” says Thomas Jakoubek, CEO of WED AG.

In addition to being the tallest, DC Tower 1 will also outperform all other office buildings in Austria in the speed at which the top floor can be reached. At 8 meters per second (28.8 km/h), KONE's seven express Alta™ elevators will be the fastest in Austria, transporting passengers from the ground floor to the panorama platform, at a height of almost 200 meters, in just 40 seconds. The express elevators will be installed in a group of 10 elevators, together with three elevators running at a speed of 6 m/s. The KONE Polaris® destination control system optimizes passenger flows and ensures short wait times.

“We are proud to participate in this significant project. Our extensive experience in successful major projects and expertise in energy efficiency will ensure a successful realization and help WED reach their ambitious environmental targets,” says Noud Veeger, EVP and Area Director for Central and North Europe.

The order was booked in Q3 of 2010.
