KONE secures major order for the first phase of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project in Washington D.C.

Press Release Published 30/03/2009

KONE received a major order to supply and install 25 KONE transit escalators and 26 hydraulic elevators, which are subcontracted for furnish and installation by KONE and a local MBE elevator company, for the first phase of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project (DCMP). These solutions will be an integral part of the DCMP to provide safe and efficient people flow throughout the 11.6 mile metro extension, spanning from the current Orange Line at East Falls Church to the station area at Wiehle Avenue in Reston.

“We are delighted to be a part of the Northern Virginia urbanization plan. As the urban areas continue to grow, it is important to provide safe, efficient and economical means of managing the flow of people. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) are meeting this challenge,” says Vance Tang, KONE EVP and Area Director for the Americas. “We are proud to have the opportunity to further strengthen our partnership with WMATA and MWAA by contributing to the extension of the existing Metrorail with KONE’s innovative People FlowTM solutions.”

As part of the Northern Virginia urbanization plan, the DCMP is an extension of the existing 106-mile Metrorail system from the current Orange line in Fairfax County through Tysons Corner to Washington Dulles International Airport and beyond to Route 772 in Loudon County. Phase 1 of the project will consist of five new stations. When completed, the DCMP will include over 23 miles of new rapid rail transit with 11 stations of new service and an inspection yard.

The installation of the KONE solutions is expected to start in the spring of 2010 and is estimated to be completed by the late spring in 2013.
