KONE, one of the global leaders in the elevator and escalator industry, has been successful in the Carbon Disclosure Project reporting and received a commendable score of 98 out of 100, rising from 90/100 in 2012. A high score indicates good internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company - from solutions to company's own operations and the whole supply chain.
The reporting is based on the real achievements KONE has made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and KONE's score has risen for four consecutive years. For the third year running, KONE is also included in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI), which lists the top 10 percent of the 260 companies included in the CDP Nordic report.
"The results reflect our mindset of continuous improvement in environmental excellence throughout our organization, and throughout the whole value chain. I would like to thank everyone for their contribution. This has been a joint effort of our employees as well as our partners," said Hanna Uusitalo, Environmental Director at KONE. "One of the reasons for this excellent score in the reporting has been the extension of the scope in the supply chain," she continues.
KONE's long-term environmental objectives are to further improve the eco-efficiency of its solutions, modernize existing elevators and escalators to make them more energy-efficient, and to further reduce the environmental impact of its operations - especially its carbon footprint. For example all KONE's factories and R&D centers together with the biggest country organizations are ISO 14001 certified.
"We have also made great achievements in raising the eco-efficiency of our products to a totally new level, and this can be seen in the results. For example our new elevator offering is 60-75% more energy efficient compared to 2008 product range, and our new escalators are 30% more eco-efficient compared to the 2010 offering," adds Uusitalo.
In addition to carbon disclosure, CDP evaluates companies on their performance for mitigating climate change on a scale of A to E. Scores from A to B are considered high performance. With an A- score in 2013, KONE's results improved also in carbon performance from a B score in 2012.
The Carbon Disclosure Project is an independent not-for-profit organization that aims to drive businesses and cities towards reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable water use. In its Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index the CDP features companies with the most professional approach to climate change information disclosure practices.
