Building in an eco-efficient way

KONE is constantly aiming to improve the environmental efficiency of its delivery and installation processes. The ISO 14001 certification helps us take steps in the right direction.

ISO 14001 certification

At the end of March 2008, 90% of our production operations where certified according to the ISO 14001 standard and we are actively continuing the certification work in the rest of our operations. Several of the country operating units also hold the environmental certificate. ISO 14001 is a series of international standards on environmental management. It provides a framework for the development of an environmental management system that helps companies deal efficiently with environmentally related issues. These include, for example, materials selection, installation, reduction of oil usage, and waste handling.

Sharing best practices

KONE’s country organizations all over the world work for sustainable urban development. Best practices are shared globally within the whole company. Some examples of these are:

In France, where KONE has had an ISO 14001 certificate since 2004, each new employee is trained in environmental processes. The same guidelines also apply for subcontractors. Also, a lot of effort has been put into effective waste handling, which is closely monitored by several measurements to ensure continuous improvement.

In China, KONE has been awarded the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 environment, health and safety certificates covering both the production unit and country organization. By November 2007, KONE China had achieved a 7 percent reduction in energy use in its elevator manufacturing process compared with 2006.
