Let's shape the low-carbon future of cities together

As buildings generate 40% of global carbon emissions, we know our customers need solutions that deliver real impact. From world-class elevator solutions and smart modernization to circular materials, we help you improve energy efficiency, lower operating costs, and reduce embodied carbon throughout building's lifecycle.

By combining the power of digital connectivity, data-driven insights, and advanced people flow solutions, we can help optimize the performance of your entire building, delivering meaningful reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions.

The KONE DX Class elevator range supports your sustainability ambitions and helps meet evolving green building requirements, while KONE People Flow Planning and Consulting services help create adaptable, future-proof buildings.

Our sustainable solutions in figures

  • 70 %

Modernization can cut energy use by up to 70% and extends equipment life.

  • 40 %

Energy savings with KONE UltraRope can be up to 40% compared to steel rope when travel rises above 500m.

  • 23

We have 23 elevator and 8 escalator models with top energy ratings.

  • 70 %

KONE regenerative drives return up to 75% of used power back to the building grid to be used for other purposes, saving energy consumption and costs.

  • 78 %

Partial upgrades reduce embodied carbon by up to 78% compared to full replacements.

  • 36 %

Together with our partners, we can help unlock energy savings of up to 36% of a building’s annual consumption by using elevator data to optimize heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

How we can collaborate to make a tangible difference

  • The best in class energy efficiency

Improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs

According to the World Economic Forum (2022), around 80% of the buildings today will still exist in 2050, but most were not designed to meet future decarbonization targets. Boost your building’s energy efficiency and lower your operating costs with KONE’s world-class solutions when modernizing or when building new.

Currently, 23 of our elevator models have received the best A-class classification, and 8 escalators and autowalks with the best A+++ rating in the escalator and autowalk category.

We can help our customers to decrease their buildings’ energy consumption, for example through:

    • Using regenerative drive technology to recover energy and feed it back to the building’s power system, returning up to 75% of the energy used.
    • Our UltraRope® hoisting technology reduces elevator energy consumption by up to 40% when travel rises above 500 meters.
    • Optimizing elevator group control to reduce unnecessary trips and idle time.
    • Combining smart scheduling and traffic analysis to minimize energy consumption during peak and off-peak hours.

Reduce embodied carbon with smarter material choices

Lower your building’s embodied carbon footprint through smart modernization and the use of lower-carbon materials.

We can help our customers reduce embodied carbon, for example through:

    • Our low-carbon steel options for selected products, reducing the embodied carbon of an elevator by up to 50%.
    • Our MonoSpace® 4 DX which features the lightweight KONE EcoRope®, enabling more space-efficient machinery and reducing the amount of material needed in the car and counterweight, cutting embodied carbon by up to 15%.
    • Our modular modernization solutions, ranging from smaller upgrades to full replacements. The modular approach enables the retention, reuse, and recycling of existing components while extending equipment lifetime. By modernizing an existing elevator instead of replacing it entirely, embodied carbon emissions can be reduced by up to 78%* while significantly decreasing waste.

*Calculations based on environmental product declaration (EPD), verified by third-party. A MonoSpace upgrade was used in this calculation.

Smarter buildings start with better data

Our digitally connected elevators enable predictive maintenance that improves efficiency and prolongs equipment life. Real-time equipment monitoring reduces unnecessary site visits, cutting fuel use and your maintenance emissions. Optimized maintenance timing extends equipment lifespan and reduces the need for replacements.

Together, we can optimize more than just your elevators. By combining digital connectivity with advanced building data analytics, we can unlock new energy efficiency opportunities across your entire property portfolio.  KONE’s digitally connected elevators provide a cost-effective source of occupancy insights, helping you understand how your building is used throughout the day. Working together with our partners, we can use this data to optimize heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, without the need for additional sensors.

The result? Potential energy savings of up to 36% of a building’s annual energy consumption, helping lower operating costs, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance occupant comfort.

  • Up to 70% energy savings

    Transparent carbon reporting

Improve your sustainability reporting, green building certification submission or green funding plan with our accurate and transparent emission data for your equipment, project or maintenance services that proves emission reduction.

Work with us to implement transparent carbon reporting for your equipment, providing credible data on emissions reductions for your own sustainability and stakeholder reporting.

Sustainability certifications for our products

Several of our solutions have received external recognition for their sustainability. We have received Singapore Green Building Product (SGBP) certifications for several solutions and we are the first and the only elevator and escalator company to have all certifications with the highest possible "Leader" ratings. The SGBP-certified solutions are recommended for Green Mark-certified buildings in the Asia-Pacific region.

KONE has also received an "Accepted" rating in the Byggvarubedömningen (BVB) assessment system for several solutions in Sweden. BVB is a Swedish nonprofit organization that evaluates solutions for buildings and drives the use of sustainable building materials.

  • BREAM

    Life cycle impact assessments

To provide transparency on the environmental impact of our solutions throughout their entire lifecycle, we publish Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). These independently verified reports help customers better understand the carbon footprint and environmental performance of our products.

We also publish Health Product Declarations (HPDs), which disclose the material content of our products and their potential health impacts. By providing this information, we support our customers in creating healthier, more sustainable buildings and meeting the growing demand for transparency in the built environment.

  • LEED

    Green building certifications

We help our customers obtain green building certifications, such as LEED and BREEAM, with best-in-class energy-efficient solutions.
