Making a difference

KONE’s country organizations all over the world work for sustainable urban development. Best practices are shared globally within the whole company. Some examples of these are:

  • In France, where KONE has had an ISO 14001 certificate since 2004, each new employee is trained in environmental processes. The same guidelines also apply for subcontractors. A lot of effort has been put into effective waste handling, which is closely monitored by several measurements to ensure continuous improvement.
  • KONE Inc. was the first elevator and escalator company to become a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. USGBC is a non-profit organization committed to expanding sustainable building practices. USGBC is composed of over 12,000 organizations from the building industry which are working to advance structures that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work.
  • In China, KONE has been awarded the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 environment, health and safety certificates covering both the production unit and country organization. By November 2007, KONE China had achieved a 7 percent reduction in energy use in its elevator manufacturing process compared with 2006.
