From moving people to managing people flow

Traditional escalators and moving walks simply move people from A to B. They don't see what's happening around them or support your branding and communication needs.

KONE Escalator DX changes that. By utilizing connected sensors, AI-based video analytics, programmable lighting, and media screens, your escalators or moving walks become active elements in your building, enhancing people flow, ambience and safety.

KONE Escalator Video Monitoring

Explore the DX features

KONE Escalator Video Monitoring uses cameras and KONE-developed AI to automatically identify unsafe behavior and crowding around your escalators. It gives you real-time visibility of what's happening at landings and/or on the steps, so you can intervene before small issues turn into incidents.

  • Cameras at entries, exits and/or mid-span send video to an on-site AI unit and server.
  • The system detects predefined scenarios such as falls, strollers and baggage carts, wrong-way travel, leaning over the handrail, and crowding at landings, as well as people counting and flow curves.
  • When thresholds are met, it triggers voice messages for passengers and generates alerts, logs and short video clips in the operator interface.

Key benefits:

  • Moves escalator safety from reactive to preventive.
  • Reduces the need for constant manual supervision and speeds up response.
  • Provides incident logs and statistics to support safety and people-flow decisions.

Frequently asked questions

A smart escalator is an escalator (or moving walk) enhanced with connected digital features that use sensors, AI-based video analytics, lighting, and media screens.

With KONE Escalator DX, the escalator or moving walk becomes a connected part of the building that can detect what is happening in real time and respond through lighting, communication, and monitoring features — improving people flow, safety, and user experience.

KONE Escalator DX features are available across a wide range of KONE escalator and moving walk models. The solution is modular, meaning different digital features can be selected and applied depending on the equipment, environment, and project requirements. In many cases, features can also be added to existing installations through modernization or upgrade.

Yes. Many KONE Escalator DX features can be installed as part of a modernization or upgrade of existing escalators or moving walks after site survey completion. The modular approach allows selected features to be added depending on the condition of the equipment and the scope of the project, without requiring full replacement.

KONE Escalator Video Monitoring is a dedicated safety feature that uses cameras and KONE-developed AI to analyse real-time activity at escalators and moving walks. It detects predefined user behavior such as falls, wrong-way travel, crowding, and unsafe behavior, and provides alerts, logs, and video clips to support faster response and preventive safety management. It gives you proof regarding your potential liability.

KONE Escalator DX features are built on a modular approach that allows them to be implemented as part of modernization or upgrade projects. This means digital features can be added to existing escalators or moving walks depending on the installation, helping to integrate new functionality while supporting continued operation of the building.

KONE Escalator Design Lighting uses LED light strips that can reproduce any color or white light temperature. This allows static or dynamic lighting modes, predefined themes, or customized lighting setups for different environments or events.

KONE Escalator Media Screen content is managed either via USB or centrally through a content management system over LAN or Wi-Fi, allowing updates, campaigns, or information to be changed without physical renovation.

KONE Escalator DX is built on a connected, modular approach that supports energy-efficient solutions across the lifecycle of the equipment. By combining connected features with predictive maintenance and system optimization, it helps support improved uptime, operational efficiency, and broader sustainability goals.
