KONE Corporation,
press release, September 26, 2025
KONE Corporation, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, has signed the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) cooperation declaration, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable industrial development and growth worldwide.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization is a UN agency that promotes sustainable industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization, and environmental sustainability, especially in developing countries.
Together with UNIDO, KONE aims to build awareness and promote sustainable practices by conducting tailored trainings for its supplier companies in Tamil Nadu, India. The pilot trainings, to be delivered during 2026, represent an opportunity for the creation of model ESG curricula for this supply chain in India to be promoted in coordination with skills development authorities. On a larger scale, this collaboration is an opportunity for KONE to further advance and expand its ongoing efforts to promote supplier human rights in India, building on the strong foundation established through previous supplier engagement and assessments.
"Sustainability is at the heart of our strategy, and collaboration across industries and borders is essential to building a better future," said Mikko Korte, Executive Vice President, Supply Chain. "By partnering with organizations like UNIDO, we benefit from their expertise in sustainable industrial development and further strengthen our practices to protect human rights across the value chain."
KONE has a Supplier Sustainability Program to ensure that its suppliers align with the company's sustainability values and standards. Every KONE supplier must meet environmental, health and safety, and human rights standards. To identify and address potential risks, KONE regularly conducts both on-site and online supplier sustainability assessments - including human rights assessments.
"By working together, we are helping industries meet global standards while ensuring that growth is both inclusive and sustainable." said Gunther Beger, Managing Director of the Directorate for SDG Innovation and Economic Transformation at UNIDO. "Collaboration like this is essential for creating resilient global supply chains and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals."
The declaration brings together leading
companies, governments, and institutions to accelerate progress
towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
through innovation, responsible business practices, and
international cooperation.
