Case overview

Built in 1986, Riverside Centre is one of the most prestigious commercial buildings in Brisbane, Australia. When it was constructed, the building was considered ahead of its time in intelligent building technology. Thirty-one years later, its 21 lifts needed to be modernized so the building could remain at the leading edge of innovative building technology.

Key project requirements

  • Upgrade the elevators to meet modern commercial requirements
  • Develop solutions that support the architect’s vision
  • Limit disruption to tenants during modernization

Bespoke solutions for a Brisbane icon

The project involved the complete refurbishment of 21 elevators and the installation of the KONE Destination Control System, which predicts travel patterns to reduce overcrowding and unnecessary stops. Five large touchscreens were integrated into a custom tenancy directory, allowing guests to use the directory as another destination control panel.

The customer also wanted a unique system to alert people not to use an elevator during a fire. Instead of a typical sticker or plaque, a warning message is displayed on screen when sensors detect smoke. Special software was developed to enable the system.

“The visitor selects the tenant she wants on the interactive directory and the system tells her which lift to use.”

Modernizing with minimal disruption

Delivering these upgrades while Riverside Centre remained operational required meticulous planning throughout the 2.5-year modernization. Weekly meetings between KONE and GPT supported timely communication with tenants, while disruptive work was carried out at night. Extraction fans, sealed work areas and thorough cleaning helped prepare the building for each new day, and an innovative protective platform allowed two teams to work safely in the goods-elevator shaft at the same time, reducing the installation period from 16 weeks to 11 weeks.

“Our goal was to complete the works with minimal customer-facing indicators. We wanted our customers to believe it was business as usual.”
