Case overview
Tower City Rapid Station is one of Cleveland's busiest transportation hubs, linking the city's rail lines and major bus routes within the Tower City Center complex. To support heavy daily passenger traffic, the station's original escalators installed around 1981 needed modernization to improve durability and achieve compliance with current safety standards.

Supporting major events
Passenger volumes at Tower City Rapid Station average more than 30,000 commuters per day and can rise to 100,000 during major events such as St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
With St. Patrick's Day and the Republican National Convention (RNC) approaching, the project team faced the challenge of modernizing all four escalators while keeping the station operational. Through careful planning and a phased approach, the modernization was completed in time for both critical events with minimal disruption.
“The project progressed extremely well. I have never seen such a dedicated, focused group of professionals who know their craft.”
Steve Hershman
Project manager, Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA)
