KONE has been awarded the contract to modernize 29 escalators and moving sidewalks at the world's busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). The project features 15 KONE EcoMod® escalators ranging in rise from 13 to 46 feet and 14 moving sidewalks ranging in length from 167 to 307 feet. KONE's relationship with the airport spans over 30 years, serving as the airport's maintenance provider since its construction in 1979.
This is the airport's fourth project utilizing KONE's EcoMod solution, a unique modernization approach that fully replaces escalators and moving walkways without disruptive and expensive truss removal. The solution will allow the airport to install the latest, energy-efficient technology quickly and without major disruption to its customers."We are looking forward to continuing our strong relationship with Hartsfield-Jackson," said Larry Wash, KONE EVP and Area Director for the Americas. "Our award-winning escalator modernization solution will help the airport increase capacity, save energy, and improve reliability without interrupting passenger traffic."
Hartsfield-Jackson has been the world's busiest airport for passenger traffic since 1998, and by number of landings and take-offs since 2005. It accommodates more than 250,000 passengers and 2,500 arrivals and departures daily.
Work on the project will commence in May and is expected to finish in February of 2016. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2012.
