KONE keeps Milan moving with smart mobility upgrades

The world’s top winter athletes are gathered in Italy for a global celebration of sport. Behind the scenes, KONE has played a part in building infrastructure that enables smooth people flow during the event – but also serve Milan long after the hustle and bustle has subsided.

Any global sports event means major construction projects. Besides the actual sports venues, the host cities must be prepared to accommodate all the athletes and ensure that the numerous visitors get around smoothly.

In Milan, KONE has been closely involved in all this, creating safe, inclusive, and efficient environments that serve both the athletes, spectators and the citizens of Milan.

“We are proud to contribute mobility infrastructure that not only supports people flow during the busy weeks of the event, but also helps create more accessible, modern and connected cities for the communities who will live there in the years to come," says Marcos Ramos, new building solutions director at KONE Italy & Iberica.

A venue for sports and entertainment

The Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena, situated on the outskirts of Milan, is a brand-new venue for sports and entertainment, with an audience capacity of up to 16,000. In the coming days, it will see the national ice hockey teams facing each other.

KONE has supplied 26 state-of-the-art elevators and escalators to the arena, ensuring that athletes, spectators, and staff can move safely and comfortably throughout the venue.

Accommodation for athletes and students

The Milan Olympic Village is an interesting example of sustainable and multifunctional urban regeneration. The project is part of the redevelopment of the former Porta Romana railway yard.

Modern apartment blocks have risen to the space formerly taken over by railway tracks. During these couple of weeks, the village will host some 1,700 athletes, but afterwards, it will be converted into the largest student housing complex in Italy, making a lasting contribution to Milan’s housing needs.

KONE has provided 16 elevators to the Olympic Village, ensuring barrier-free living and smooth access for all residents and visitors.

Serving the city for years to come

Besides the venues built specifically for the winter games, KONE also contributes to everyday life in Milan – both during the games and afterwards. On Milan’s metro line 3, we are modernizing 17 stations. In total, the project includes the replacement of 48 elevators and 50 escalators.

Moreover, during the busy weeks when Milan sees an influx of sports enthusiasts, KONE is maintaining enhanced service preparedness, with extra service technicians on duty, ready to act quickly should any problems arise.

A major sports event catches the world’s attention for a few precious weeks. But once the games conclude, our elevators and escalators will keep serving the citizens of Milan, making life in the city safer, smoother and more accessible.
