KONE to modernize elevators and escalators at Los Angeles International Airport

Press Release Published 08/07/2009

KONE was awarded a contract to provide a mix of new installations and modernization to all elevators and escalators at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the United States of America. The contract covers maintenance, new installation, equipment repairs and upgrades in each of the eight terminals at LAX and is estimated to be worth more than EUR 16 million. The order was booked in the second quarter of 2009.

The project represents a significant investment by the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners to not only ensure that LAX is in compliance with all current health, safety and environmental standards, but to also provide dependable, and quality in-terminal transportation options for passengers and airport employees. An estimated 59 million people travel through LAX every year, making it one of the busiest airports in the United States. Therefore, it’s critical that the elevators, escalators and autowalks work smoothly and efficiently to get passengers to their desired destination. The project is the first of four phases planned at LAX.

“Besides serving the United States’ second largest city, LAX is the western gateway for many foreign visitors. It’s important that they can travel throughout the airport complex, from arrival to departure, with ease,” says Vance Tang, KONE EVP and Area Director for the Americas. “This project is another opportunity for KONE to support the needs of our customers by improving the people flow within their facilities while delivering energy savings through eco-efficient technology.”

KONE will look to utilize energy-saving products that will help increase the overall sustainability of LAX’s current transportation systems. The modernization of the equipment will begin in September 2009 in Terminals 2, 3, 5 and 6. The project is estimated to be completed by July 2011.
