Our safety commitments and goals

Regarding the safety of our own employees and subcontractors, we have one main objective that guides our operations: We strive for all our employees and subcontractors to return home safe every day.

Everyone at KONE has the responsibility and capability to report incidents and near misses through our reporting platform. Furthermore, everyone has the duty and authority to stop work in unsafe circumstances.

Actions to strengthen our safety culture

Safety embedded into every aspect of our operations

  • Our integrated management system embeds safety into every aspect of our operations, covering all activities, products, and services globally. It meets internationally known management system standards such as ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, ISO 27001:2022, as well as the Lift Directive 2014/33/EU.
  • KONE Supplier Code of Conduct sets a requirement for all our suppliers, including subcontractors, to protect the health and safety of their employees.
  • To further support our subcontractors’ health and safety, our framework agreements set more specific requirements regarding the work methods, tools, safety measures, and training for each project.

A competent and qualified workforce is a critical factor for safety

  • All employees and subcontractors receive health and safety training, which consists of general training and additional role and task-specific training. For example, we train our maintenance technicians regularly to ensure they have the required competence to perform their work safely.
  • Furthermore, we set expectations and provide safety trainings to our subcontractors.

Increasing safety awareness through activities and campaigns

  • We have defined core safety principles aimed at controlling significant health and safety risks and averting serious incidents within our operations.
  • Safety is continuously promoted through global and local activities and campaigns. Every year, KONE organizes a global Safety Week with special events, training, and activities for employees, partners, and end-users.
  • We also run an annual Year-end Safety campaign to emphasize the importance of safety throughout the year, with a particular focus on the busy end-of-year period.

Our progress in safety performance

KONE's health and safety performance has improved over the years, thanks to our active efforts to cultivate a safety-oriented culture. We follow various key performance indicators to evaluate safety across our value chain.

  • Our Industrial Injury Frequency Rate (IIFR), moderate and serious injuries per million hours worked, improved from 7.5 in 2007 to 1.3 in 2024, with a long-term goal of 0.6 by 2030.
  • 91% of employees had completed general KONE safety training by the end of 2024.
  • In 2024, we received over 205,000 near-miss reports from employees. The number of reports has been increasing annually, enabling us to identify and address safety issues before they result in negative health consequences.
  • All KONE employees have access to our safety reporting platform.
  • All major production sites are certified with ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001/OHSAS 18001 standards, demonstrating our robust safety and quality management.

We follow various forward-looking safety measures and strive to shift our focus from historical data to proactive actions and indicators.
