KONE Wins Major Project Orders in the U.S.

KONE Inc. of the United States has been awarded two contracts as part of a two-year project to enable the Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. to increase annual passenger capacity to 55 million. The Hensel Phelps Construction Company has chosen KONE to supply the elevators, escalators and autowalks for the Pedestrian Walkback Tunnel designed to improve the flow of passengers between the Main Terminal and Midfield Concourse B. The 40-foot wide (12.2-meter) and 27-foot high (8.2-meter) tunnel will be served by six 200-foot long (61-meter) KONE ECO3000™ autowalks, four 53-foot (16.2-meter) escalators and two custom hydraulic elevators. KONE Inc. secured this order following years of design and planning collaboration with the architectural firms Earthtech and Giuliani & Associates.

Turner Construction Company has awarded KONE the elevator and escalator contract for the Automated People Mover Main Terminal Station at the same airport. This project is the first phase of a below-ground train system at Dulles, which will convey passengers between the Main Terminal and concourse stations. Future phases will include the vertical transportation equipment linking the train level to each concourse. During Phase One, KONE will supply 34 ECO3000™ escalators and 20 custom hydraulic elevators.

KONE has booked an order to provide the Sacremento Airport in California with two KONE ECO3000™ escalators and 11 glass-back elevators for a parking garage addition. The parking structure is already linked to the terminal via a crosswalk and KONE ECO3000™ escalators. Hesselberg Keesee and Associates is the elevator consultant for the job, which was designed by International Parking Design and will be built by John F. Otto. Installation will begin near the end of 2003 and be completed in May, 2004.

In the Miami, Florida area KONE has been busy supplying high-rise elevators to luxury hotels and residences. Following on from previous references such as the Santa Maria, Metropolitan, Bristol Towers, JW Marriott and the Courts Brickell Key, the Maimi Branch of KONE Inc. is currently installing elevators and escalators for the 64-story Four Seasons and 36-story Espirito Santa Plaza. Now KONE has been awarded the contract for another 49-story luxury condominuium in the area, including eight EcoSystem™ elevators at 3.5 m/s, two more at 2.5 m/s and one MonoSpace® unit. The developers chose KONE because they wanted state-of-the-art equipment.
