KONE elevators moving spectators to their seats at four World Cup stadiums

Press Release Published 28/06/2010

Spectators at four stadiums hosting matches for this year’s World Cup in South Africa are using KONE elevators to get to their seats. A total of 33 KONE elevators have been installed in Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium, Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium as well as in Johannesburg’s Ellis Park Stadium and Soccer City Stadium. Overall, 27 games will be played in all four buildings and the final match of the tournament will be played in the Soccer City Stadium.

The elevators are intended for various purposes inside the stadiums, such as transporting spectators to their seats, transporting goods inside the buildings as well as moving media and VIP guests to the upper level boxes. All the elevators are under KONE’s maintenance and include full-time standby crews at all venues during the World Cup, taking place from June 11th until July 11th.

“We are very proud to have been a part of the construction of these four stadiums which are currently being used for the World Cup in South Africa,” says Alan Underwood, Managing Director, KONE South Africa. “KONE’s vision of providing People Flow™ solutions translates perfectly to entertainment facilities such as stadiums where thousands of spectators must reach their seats in time for the opening kick-off and then need to exit the stadium in a safe and efficient way once the match is over.”
