Our human rights impact assessment: good progress since 2019, future actions outlined

30 August 2023

KONE has updated its human rights impact assessment in order to better understand the potential human rights risks in our operations and across the value chain, and to identify key actions to mitigate human rights impacts.

KONE is committed to upholding the highest standards of good practice in its own operations and through its complex supply chain. In 2019 KONE partnered with consultancy GoodCorporation to carry out a human rights impact assessment, and this assessment has now been updated to reflect KONE’s internal progress and changes in the external business landscape.

The assessment recognized that since 2019, KONE has solidified its commitment to human rights through the creation of its human rights working group and the publication in 2022 of its first human rights policy. It has also conducted assessments of direct material suppliers, and put a focus on gender equality and health and safety.

Future actions set out

The impact assessment found that KONE’s salient human rights issues - meaning those relating to the rights of individuals – remain the same since 2019. This includes the health and safety of employees and workers throughout the supply and delivery chains, as well as respect for labor rights (particularly concerning child and forced labor), discrimination and harassment, freedom of association and collective bargaining, and conditions of employment.

The report recommended that KONE continues to focus attention on respect for labor rights in the supply and delivery chains. One key recommendation is to increase our on-site human rights assessments of suppliers and of our own employee accommodation around the world.

Global Compliance and other key functions at KONE will continue to work on expanding supply chain mapping, due diligence and monitoring, while also raising awareness and giving training to employees about human rights issues.

At KONE we emphasize the need to respect human rights, and we recognize that showing real care for our global impact on individuals is a team effort. We expect the same commitment from all our suppliers, distributors, and other business partners across the entire delivery chain. Our full human rights policy is available to read here.
